Facts & Solution Guide

The Back Pain Epidemic

Whether it is lumbar disc, thoracic or the cervical spine, the statistics indicate that 60-90% of the population will have back pain some point in their lives. With back pain being so common, there are some great potential solutions out there for you.

The first place to treat is a conservative option. Try everything first before you opt for surgical intervention and the best place to start is with chiropractic. You need to begin by having a comprehensive and thorough examination to figure out the diagnosis. Only then can the treatment be directed to the problem vs. the pain approach. Dr. Hoffman is board eligible chiropractic neurologist with a sports rehabilitation certification. Dr. Hoffman knows how to treat a multitude of problems from acute strains and sprains to chronic conditions.

General Misconceptions:

1. Back pain goes away quickly. It takes time to heal. It is not a trivial problem. The course of conservative treatment includes adjustments, physical therapy, spinal decompression if indicated, and acupuncture. Our acute cases are seen on a daily treatment schedule for optimal results. Tackling back problems is difficult, so you need to persevere and give it time and effort.

2. Pills (NSAIDS and muscle relaxants) are safe and effective for your back pain. NSAIDS is the abbreviation for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They are thought to be less toxic to the body but that doesn't mean they are safe. NSAIDs can cause bleeding in the stomach and intestines. Kidney and liver problems can also occur. Many people approach back pain by taking pain pills. Pain is a signal that there is something wrong with your body. It is kind of like a fire alarm. It is not the fire. When a house is on fire do the firefighters show up and just cut the alarm? No! If you want to solve the problem, you need to have a comprehensive exam to find out what is causing the pain to begin with.

3. Bed rest will solve the problem. Medical doctors use to prescribe two weeks of bed rest until the problem heals. Studies now show that inactivity will actually make back pain worse. It de-conditions you spinal muscles and makes them weaker which eventually leads to more pain and less function.

1. DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy is a traction based procedure and is one of the leading long-term treatment options for low back(lumbar) and neck(cervical) problems.

Often, the pain in your back or neck is due to a bulging or herniated condition of one or more of the discs that act as  a sort of shock absorber or cushion in between the vertebrae that make up your spinal column. When your disc(s) bulge, are herniated, or simply wear out, the disc can press or pinch against a sensitive nerve, the result of which can be VERY painful.

Over time, your body suffers from the wear and tear of daily living, as well as the overall effects of gravity. DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy helps to create a negative pressure in your disc(decompression). Decompression is the result of proper positioning and tractioning of your spinal column. DTS Spinal Decompression Therapy is an intuitive approach to help relieve the pain in your back or other areas of your spine.

2. Considering Surgery? Spinal surgery should only be used by those who have tried everything else. Surgery is indicated only for neurological deficits like foot drop.  Surgery is not a cure-all and often can lead to further complications. Do your own research. Surgeons today recognize that back pain alone is not a good indication to have surgery. There is something between the drastic, unproven and irreversible spinal surgery and just doing nothing, allowing the condition to get worse. That option is DTS Spinal Decompression.

dianaFor several years I have been experiencing low back pain. I received Chiropractic adjustments which helped. I started the DTS Spinal Decompression system that Dr. Hoffman recommended and I am feeling so much better. I am able to sleep for six to seven hours. This system along with the Chiropractic Care has made my pain and sleepless nights a thing of the past.      Dianna

jenniferI was involved in an automobile accident. The pain in my lower back stopped me from being able to continue my daily functions. After adjustments and massage therapy, I felt better. Dr. Hoffman also suggested using the DTS Spinal Decomression Therapy. After twelve sessions, I am happy to report I have my health back.    Jennifer

As a member of the LPGA I was participating in the Future's Tour. I told a fellow Tour player that I was having low back and neck pain, along with headaches and hand pain. These problems affected my game and I was afraid that it would shorten my career. A friend introduced me to Dr. Matthew Hoffman who is also a sports physician. After treatments with Dr. Hoffman I feel the best I have in years. Thanks Doc for helping me indentify the problem so I can improve my health and get back to playing great golf.     Tiffany

Approximately in the middle of May, I thought I had pulled a muscle in my shoulder and neck. My wife and I decided to go to Dr. Hoffman. He told me he had good news and bad news. The good news was he could help me, but the bad news was that he couldn't "fix" me. Dr. Hoffman explained that the vertebrae in my neck were starting to fuse together. He recommended I go through a series of cervical spinal decompression therapy to help with my condition. I noticed after 10 sessions, all of my symptoms had diminished. The severe itching and the phlegm in my throat were both gone. My sleeping patterns and breathing had also improved. Overall, I was feeling a lot better. As of today, the end of September I would say I am 80% better. With the treatment that I underwent in the office, there was no surgery and no medication. I would recommend this therapy to any one. Dr. Hoffman has helped me so much. I know that I can't be fixed and at 72 years of age, all I can ask for is to be helped. I will continue to go to Dr. Hoffman for as long as he can help me. Thanks Dr. Hoffman!   -Ken
